This weekend, I’ll be reading Tarot cards at the Dirty South Yoga Festival. My favorite part about getting ready to read Tarot is picking out which decks to bring. Each deck has a different theme or style of illustrations.
I always bring my trusty Albano-Waite deck when I read at festivals or events, and then I randomly select 1 or 2 more decks to bring along. Even though the Albano-Waite deck has the historic Pamela Colman Smith illustrations, which are the most common Tarot imagery in the world, some of the images can be unsettling for people who are completely unfamiliar with Tarot.
I’ve been thinking about how much I love the images in the Light & Shadow deck. They are printed in black and white, and all originated as linoleum cuts. This deck was featured on an episode in the first season of Sex and the City, way back in 1998. I saw that deck on TV, and instantly got the Excalibur reaction from Wayne’s World: “it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.”
Back then, Internet shopping was nowhere near as evolved as it is today, so it took quite a bit of effort and synchronicity before that deck landed in my possession. Today’s featured image shows the Sun card from both the Albano-Waite and the Light & Shadow deck.
